How to build a monthly budget that works
A useful budget is a plan you can actually compare with what happened.
1. Start with reliable income
Use take-home income you reasonably expect rather than optimistic future income.
2. Separate fixed and variable costs
Fixed costs include recurring obligations. Variable costs need category limits that can be adjusted.
3. Fund savings deliberately
Treat savings goals as planned allocations, not whatever happens to remain.
4. Review the gap
Compare planned and actual spending every month and change the plan where the evidence says it needs changing.
